Never Lose Faith

2020 Never lost faith in the End of the Story.jpg

I heard these words yesterday and they captured my heart. What these words speak to me, and I hope they speak to you, is the truth that, what is seen as the end, is truly a new beginning.

I invite you to join me to...

pause. breathe. pray.

May we absorb the perspective and truth offered in these words. May we never lose faith in the end of the story, which is truly the beginning of another.

With love and hope,
Shawn

Pause. Breathe. Pray. Poem

2020 PBP Lyrics Pic.jpg

When I woke up this morning, reality set it
I can’t believe this is happening
I see the world we knew changed before my eyes
I must shift my gaze up high

For God you are in this day
So I will pause. breathe. pray.
And seek your Way

Let me look for the helpers living out love
And your hand in this day from up above
Let me know what is mine to say and do
With my eyes fixed on you

When the darkness seems greater than the light
I will trust each step with you by my side
For you are the way, the light, the truth
My hope is in you

For God you are in this day
So I will pause. breathe. pray.
And seek your Way

Let me give thanks for the helpers living out love
And your hand in this day from up above
Let me know what is mine to say and do
With my eyes fixed on you

The uncertainty, the unknown, the doubt, the fear.
Will all wash away when you are near
Give me perspective
Remind me of your truth
Give me wisdom; what is mine to do
And surrender the rest to you...

For my trust is in you.

These words came to me a few weeks ago. I share them with you today in case they can be a comfort to you, as they have been to me.

With love and hope,
Shawn

Follow Loves Lead

2020 cast your cares pic.jpg

This morning I am sitting in a broken space.

I woke up to learn two friend’s had loved ones pass on yesterday, one, a child to cancer and the other, a parent to COVID.

With this sad news I find myself brokenhearted beside them...

and I want to fix it.

I want to do something, or say something, to make it better for them...

but I can’t.

I can’t make it better.

So instead I sit here in my home, as they sit in theirs, and I will share in their grief and sadness.

Why?

Because this is what love does.

Love doesn’t push and it doesn’t pull. Love never leaves you alone, or leaves you to do it on your own. Love comes beside you, and me, and says, let me love you here, where you are; let me feel some of what you feel so I can better understand your heart, and we won’t move forward until you are ready to.

I share this with you today because we’ve all been faced with this moment, where people we love are hurting and out of our love for them, we want to say and/or do something to try and make it better; somehow in someway. Yet the hard truth is there are some things we can’t make better, except to let them know they are loved, and are not alone.

I invite you to join me to...

pause. breathe. pray.

May we follow Jesus’ example of love and be willing to come beside one another in the tough times. May we sit beside one another, and take on each other’s hurts and love each other there. May we be...

Be present, and listen.
Be sad and broken-hearted.
Be prayerful.
Be love.

And when our loved ones let us know what they need, may we become love in action.

Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you🙏

With love and hope,
Shawn

Enjoy the Perfect Moments

2020 Kate walk with Gbean.jpg

The past two days our teenager has asked me to go on walks with her.

On the outside, I calmly said, “Sure!”, while on the inside I had a dance party.

Not every moment during this time will be perfect, yet may we capture and enjoy the perfect moments this time gives us.

With love and hope,
Shawn

Use the Space Wisely

2020 Easter Egg.jpg

My mom gave me the book Gift from the Sea by Anne Lindbergh years ago. I usually read it in the summer while at the beach. Yet this week I decided to pick up the calming, quick read, to nourish myself with some of the nuggets of wisdom in it.

As I read through the final chapter there was a line that really captured my soul that I wanted to share with you. It read,

“Here on the island I have had space. Paradoxically, in this limited area, space has been forced upon me.”

This made me pause as we have all been put on our islands during this pandemic. In our limited areas, space has been forced upon us. This insight lead to me the question, “how am I using this space we have been given?”

Am I using it to be and learn from this space forced upon us?

Am I numbing myself in this space in some way?

Am I filling the space?

Am I serving just myself in this space, or others too?

Am I using this space wisely?

I share this with you today, as you sit on your island, and I on mine. I invite you to join me to...

pause. breathe. pray.

May we take note, without judgement, of how we have been using this space. And ask ourselves, “when we look back on this time, will we we wish would have used it the same, or differently?” Then may we take the insight the answer to that question provides and step into this new day, into the space we’ve been given, and use it wisely.

With love and hope,
Shawn

Happy Easter💜🙏💜

On Friday hope was lost.

Today hope was restored, for always and forever.

He Washed Their Feet

Boston Puzzle from laurie.jpg

Something that always makes me pause is the humility of Jesus and how He walked the walk. He isn’t a leader who simply tells others what to do, he lived it out. He wasn’t one to give a suggestion and then say it was optional whether he would do it or not. He would live it out as a way of saying, “I am in this with you, in every way I can be.”

And at the last supper, which we recognize today, Jesus got down on his knees and washed his disciples feet.

This is so backwards from what culture often demonstrates today. More often than not, we would witness the opposite; the people washing the leaders feet.

And this is the backwards love Jesus presents to us today, and everyday.

I invite you to join me today to...

pause. breathe. pray.

May we ask ourselves these questions:

Who are we following?

Will these people lead us, and love us with a selfless love?

Would they be willing to put themselves before us?

Would they be willing to sit at our dirty feet and wash them?

May we ponder these questions, as a way to sift through who may be best to follow over who isn’t.

May we each consider putting Jesus on the list. And when we are ready to, placing him at the top of the list of people to follow. As his selfless love is like no other and his humble leadership is transformational.

With love and hope,
Shawn

“Now that I, your God and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” - John 13:14-17

The Healing Puzzle

Boston Puzzle from laurie.jpg

The Healing Puzzle

Those who will help in the healing will be of all races, ethnicities, faith walks (or none), shapes, sizes, etc.

We will each do our part to help in the healing.

Each of us matters.

Each of us has value.

Each of us is serving our greater purpose, in our own unique way.

I share this with you today to shine a light on how walls, that sometimes are created, fall down in the midst of a struggle. Instead of a wall, we build bridges between hearts and come together to accomplish the common goal; to love others as ourselves.

I invite you to join me to...

pause. breathe. pray.

May we give thanks for each individual person who is part of this healing puzzle for the Coronavirus, from those on the frontlines, those working behind the scenes, to those of us at home. May we recognize that the healing will not happen when we go at it alone. It is when we join together that we will make the greatest impact in this battle.

With love and hope,
Shawn

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” -Mark 12:31

PS This puzzle was made for me by a dear friend after she spent a week with me in Boston during my treatments. She met the people who were a part of my healing from cancer and gifted me this beautiful puzzle. Today, one of my incredible nurses from Boston will begin her shifts caring for COVID patients at Mass General. Her courage and selflessness are evident as her primary focus is to give her patients the best care she can. When you think to, please pray beside me for her, and all the other essential workers, and their families, as well as every patient and their loved ones too. Thank you💕🙏💕
